Dr Sophie Kellaway has been awarded a Vivo biobank grant by CCLG to determine whether a drug already on the market for asthma could prevent relapse of t(8;21) AML. This research follows on from pioneering work published in Nature Communications 2 years ago showing that t(8;21) stem cells hijack the IL-5 pathway to grow. The question is now whether an antibody called benralizumab, which targets the immune system to cells with the IL-5 receptor, can help the immune system find and kill AML stem cells too.
