MRC New Investigator Research Grant for Dr Sophie Kellaway

Congratulations to Dr Sophie Kellaway who has been awarded a prestigious New Investigator Research Grant from the UK Medical Research Council! The title of the grant is “Understanding Acute Myeloid Leukaemia stem cell growth: Prediction and prevention of relapse”. This cutting-edge research project will run in collaboration with Prof Dr Olaf Heidenreich at the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology in Utrecht, with Rarity Bioscience in Uppsala and with clinical haematologists Dr Alex Glover and Dr Manoj Raghavan at Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

Sophie said, “I am hugely grateful for the MRC investing in my group to continue our work on stem cell growth drivers in acute myeloid leukaemia, following on from my recent study published in Nature Communications. This award will allow me to grow my team and strengthen collaborations which are both crucial at this stage in my career. Most importantly though this project will allow us to make significant strides towards understanding why AML relapses and how this can better be detected and stopped – before patients fall ill again.”
